Fishing boat and five crew saved

A fishing boat was saved after a major rescue operation off the coast of Fraserburgh.

Lead Us started taking on water about 30 miles out to sea on Wednesday.

An RAF helicopter, a coastguard helicopter and lifeboat were all called in and pumps were placed on board to rid the vessel of water.

The five crew stayed to assist the rescuers in their efforts. The boat arrived safely back in port at about midnight.

ABERDEEN COASTGUARD ASSIST FISHING VESSEL

Aberdeen Coastguard is coordinating the safe return of the fishing vessel Lead Us, which was taking in water 35 miles off Fraserburgh this afternoon.

Aberdeen Coastguard was contacted by the Fraserburgh registered fishing vessel Lead Us reporting that they were taking in water and their onboard pumps were not keeping up with the ingress of water.

Aberdeen Coastguard requested the Rescue Helicopter 137 from Lossiemouth transfer two Coastguard pumps to the vessel and this has enabled the vessel to make progress towards Fraserburgh.
This evening, two more Coastguard pumps are being transferred to the vessel by the Shetland Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.

Fraserburgh RNLI all weather lifeboat is on scene with the vessel and will be able to escort the vessel into port.

Lead Us is a 23 meter fishing vessel registered in Fraserburgh, with five crew on board and was returning from fishing grounds when she got into difficulty. The weather conditions are winds SE 4 to 5 with a 3 to 4 meter swell and good visibility.

Skipper of trawler which got into difficulty lost boat 10 years ago
coastguard called as precaution after vessel’s pumps failed to keep up with the water

By Stephen Christie

Published: 15/01/2010

THE skipper of a trawler, which started taking on water off the Aberdeenshire coast, lost a boat in a similar incident 10 years ago.

George Stephen, 58, and his four crew were aboard the Fraserburgh-registered Lead Us when she got into difficulty around 35 miles from her home port on Wednesday.

The 75ft vessel was returning from fishing grounds when her pumps failed to keep up with the intake of water. She returned safely to Fraserburgh harbour under escort around midnight on Wednesday night.

In December 1999, Mr Stephen was skipper on the Broch-registered Carvela when she sank less than five minutes after he and his five crew managed to scramble on to a liferaft.

Last night, the fisherman, of Charles Street, St Combs, said: “We were never in any real danger. The on-board pumps just couldn’t keep up with the water and we called the coastguard as a precaution more than anything else.

“The situation was never really out of our control and we were asked if we wanted to evacuate but that never crossed our minds. I lost a boat some years ago but there was no fear of that this time.

“You do stop and think if evacuation would be right because of the young boys on board. But sometimes you have to face the mishaps and problems of fishing and, with 40 years’ experience, I can normally handle most things.”

RAF search-and-rescue helicopter Rescue 137 from Lossiemouth was scrambled and transferred two coastguard pumps to the vessel, which was then able to make progress towards land.

Two more coastguard pumps were transferred to the vessel by the Shetland coastguard helicopter.

Fraserburgh lifeboat was launched and took a fifth pump but that was not needed. The lifeboat escorted the trawler safely into port.

Coxswain Victor Sutherland said: “There were already four pumps in use and we were not needed.”

The Lead Us was last night on the slip at Fraserburgh harbour for repairs.

During the 1999 incident a mayday was made by the Carvela when the boat began to take on water. Mr Stephen and his crew battled for nearly three hours 50 miles east of Fraserburgh but were unable to save the 85ft boat.
