The inshore RNLI boat with three crew members on board is understood to have been on a regular exercise off Raven Point on the northern shore of Wexford Harbour.
There was a heavy swell at the time.
Two crew members are reported to be clinging to the upturned hull of the boat and a third is missing.
The D Class lifeboat is a rigid inflatable boat used by the RNLI for the past 40 years and is used as an inland and limited coastal rescue boat.
