A lifeboat volunteer has been reported missing off the Wexford coast.

A search involving a rescue helicopter is under way in an area known as Raven Point just outside Wexford Harbour.

The alarm was raised shortly before midday.

The inshore RNLI boat with three crew members on board is understood to have been on a regular exercise off Raven Point on the northern shore of Wexford Harbour.

There was a heavy swell at the time.

Two crew members are reported to be clinging to the upturned hull of the boat and a third is missing.

The D Class lifeboat is a rigid inflatable boat used by the RNLI for the past 40 years and is used as an inland and limited coastal rescue boat.

Three crew members of the Wexford lifeboat have been rescued after their boat capsized in Wexford harbour this morning .

The RNLI inshore boat is understood to have been on a training exercise when the incident occured.

Two crew members managed to stay in contact with the upturned lifeboat and were winched to safety by the Irish Coastguard helicopter while a third crew member was recovered a mile and a half northeast from the scene by Rosslare RNLI lifeboat.

A search involving a rescue helicopter was launched shortly after midday when the alarm was raised.

The Wexford D class inshore lifeboat was launched at 10.15am this morning with three volunteer lifeboat crew onboard.
