RNLI lifesaving equipment stolen in North Tyneside

By Sonia SharmJul 11 2012

Two lifeguard huts in Tynemouth, used by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), were targeted on Monday night.
The offenders broke into the units at Longsands Beach and King Edward’s Bay before making off with a number of essential items including handheld radios, telephones and radio chargers.

The charity suffered a similar burglary last month, when offenders stole radios, a mobile phone and a bike from their base on Whitley Bay promenade.
The RNLI, which relies on public donations to maintain its service, will have to replace the equipment. It is also planning to provide extra security at its sites to prevent further break-ins.

At the moment, the volunteers are continuing to run their daily beach safety patrols with devices loaned from neighbouring RNLI units.
Any witnesses to the thefts are asked to ring North Tyneside police on 101 ext 69191.
