This tale comes from Rhodesia ( now Zimbabwe) , just after independance, when there was a lot of terrorists at large . It was told to me as a true story, but does that matter ?
Police patrol of several locals with a native Sergeant in charge was sent out to man a road block by the inspector. Along comes old Farmer George & Mavis in their pickup. They stopped. The engine bay was inspected, as was the inside of the cab, and other places. Before letting the folks on their way, they had to take off their shoes.
Now George was a friend of the inspector and next time they had a pint together asked him about the shoe thing. Road searches was a way of life, shoe searches was not.
"Can't understand it, "said the inspector ," last thing I told the Sergeant before they left was not to forget to check the boots"
