THE Common Fisheries Policy is undergoing reform and the EuroFishTV cartoon series shines a light on the blurry decision making process, to make it accessible to a larger audience.

Episode two features an exclusive interview with Maria Damanaki, EU Fisheries Commissioner, who explains how the rules can be reformed to ensure Europe’s thousands of small fishermen get their fair share of the catch in a sustainable way.

Commissioner Damanaki proposes reconfiguring the way fishermen are granted public funds, giving them money in a “smart way, so our fishermen will take only the fish they can sell from the sea”.

“The most important thing” she says, “is to give fishermen the message that they can fish less and earn more”.

Commenting on the Commissioner’s words is Jeremy Percy, CEO of the UK’s small fisherman’s group, NUTFA (New Under Ten Fisherman’s Association). Mr Percy welcomes Commissioner Damanaki’s statement but warns that the Commission “needs to back it up with real measures”.  Percy points out that “80% of the European fleet is determined to be small scale” and in the UK where the proportion is much the same, “we only have 4% of the quota allowed”.

Mr Percy also welcomed the new alliance between small fishermen and environmental organisations floated by Ocean 2012 whose 168 signatories from 17 Member States are given a roll-call at the end of the video.

I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....
