A hoax call led to the Morecambe lifeboat searching "challenging seas" in the early hours of Saturday, emergency services have said.
The RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched after the coastguard received a 999 call that a woman had been seen walking into the sea near the Battery Hotel.
The boat's crew searched for 40 minutes in rough seas off the resort.
RNLI Helmsman James Donnell said they were in the water within 15 minutes and faced some "challenging seas".
"We could have been better used elsewhere and the same applies for the police and coastguard rescue units, and the police helicopter which was drafted up to assist in the search."
