Jersey could run out of fishermen to meet demand, the head of the island's fishermen's association has said.

Don Thompson said fleets as close as Granville and St Malo are ageing, without many youngsters willing to go into the industry.

He hopes a new training course in Jersey will encourage more people to pursue fishing as a career.

Mr Thompson said seeing fisherman struggle in the UK was a reminder for Jersey to prepare for the future.

He said: "Fish stocks are better now than we have seen for a very long time but there aren't the fishermen or boats to catch them now.

"We see ports up through Scotland where the whole towns and villages where the lifeblood of those places was fishing and that has gone.

"It is frightening to see that, it is a lesson for us here not to let go of that and to keep looking forward, be proactive and look 10 years down the road."

I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....
