Skipper seeks relatives of Grimsby trawler which saved Icelandic fishermen

A FORMER skipper hopes to preserve one of Grimsby's most heroic events in fishing history by tracking down the relatives of a trawler crew who saved eight shipwrecked Icelandic fishermen.

Ken Knox of Hull is on a mission to track down relatives of the Grimsby-based crew of the Hull City trawler, who rescued the fishermen from the icy waters off the south coast of Iceland in 1954.

Mr Knox, chairman of the Royal National Mission To Deep Sea Fishermen, said tracking down relatives of the crew and reuniting them with Icelandic relatives of the rescued crew was vital in keeping Grimsby's links to Iceland alive.

The Icelandic crew were rescued when Grimsby skipper John Searby spotted a red handkerchief fluttering above the breaking waves off the south coast of Iceland.

The men had drifted for 22 hours without food or water in a small rubber dinghy after their fishing boat, the Gladur, had capsized in a storm.

Understanding the red handkerchief as a distress flag, the Grimsby trawler headed for the dinghy and picked up the men.

Mr Knox, who has toured cruises in Norway and Iceland giving lectures on the days of the fishermen, was inspired to unite relatives after being invited to speak on a cruiser on the North Cape of Iceland.

Find out why and how you can get involved in today's Grimsby Telegraph.
