AT the invitation of the new Fisheries Minister, Richard Benyon MP, representatives of the New Under Tens Fishermens Association (NUTFA) met with him in Westminster on Tuesday 6th July.

In the course of a full, frank and open exchange of views, NUTFA provided the Minister and his team with an ‘Under 10’s’ perspective on future fisheries management, within both a UK and European context.

Access to fishing opportunities and the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, especially as it relates to small scale issues were discussed at length, along with other aspects of mutual interest.

Speaking after the meeting, Dave Cuthbert, Co-Chairman of  NUTFA said: “We were heartened to find that the positive approach and understanding  with regard to under 10 matters shown by Mr Benyon whilst in opposition has in fact been strengthened now that he is holding the reins.

“Both the Minister and NUTFA recognised the problems and opportunities with regard to our sector and that by working together in a spirit of true partnership, that we can underpin the long term sustainable development of our part of the fleet. There is clearly a new and more cooperative agenda with this Government and we welcome the opportunity to work, not only with the Minister but with other sectoral representatives in a spirit of cooperation rather than conflict, to build a brighter future for the fleet in general and the under 10’s in particular.

“We are grateful to the Minister for kicking off what will need to be a series of meetings so that we can work with him for the benefit of all concerned,” Cuthbert added.

I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....
