Many tributes to master trawler builder
Published:  08 July, 2010

MANY tributes have been paid to John Oliver, a director and founder  of the Whitby trawler building company Parkol Marine who died suddenly recently.

Mr Oliver, who was aged 60, is thought to have suffered a heart attack.
His death has left the fishing world stunned. His company built many trawlers for fishing firms in Scotland Shetland, and only last year finished the Jubilee Quest, Grimsby's latest trawler. One of Parkol's regular customers was Locker Trawlers which has its head office in Whitby. Just a few months ago he was the naming ceremony for a new Fraserburgh twin rig trawler called the Challenger. Parkol Marine's launches always attracted a large crow of onlookers.

Parkol Marine employs around 25 people directly, but also engages number of fishing related sub contracting businesses, most of them based in Scotland. Earlier this year Parkol was granted planning permission to extend its Whitby site.

John, who worked closely with fellow directors Jim Morrison and John McGrory, helped develop Parkol Marine into one of the leading trawler building firms in the UK.. It also built other vessels including workboats.

John had been connected with marine engineering most of his working life. he was recognised as an  expert on marine engines for the fishing fleet and he was often consulted for advice.
After leaving school, John was apprenticed to a Newcastle firm of marine engineers. He met Jim Morrison over 20 years ago and the two men decided to set up Parkol Engineering.
John was also a great horse lover and fittingly his coffin was carried on a dray cart pulled by horses for the funeral at St Hilda's Priory. The service was attended by many people form the fishing industry in both England and Scotland. He leaves a wife Esther, who he met on a horse drawn holiday in Ireland. They have three children.
