The Seattle-based captain of the "Deadliest Catch" fishing vessel Cornelia Marie has been flown to Anchorage after suffering a stroke while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska.

According to the vessel's Web site, Capt. Phil Harris was stricken Friday night. Harris was flown to Anchorage and underwent surgery over the weekend. His sons, Josh and Jake, joined him there.

The Web site account says it may be some time before "anything substantial" is known about Harris' condition.

The Discovery Channel cable television reality show depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.

The Web site reports a family friend, Derek Ray, has flown to St. Paul to take over the role of relief skipper for the rest of the opilio crab season.

Update from http://www.entertain...a-2010020334256

Deadliest Catch star Phil Harris is reportedly exhibiting remarkable signs of improvement after suffering a stroke while captaining his Cornelia Marie crab fishing vessel last Friday.

The Seattle-based skipper of the Cornelia Marie from the widely viewed ‘Deadly Catch’ series on Discovery has finally woken up from a medically induced coma on Tuesday he was placed in to reduce brain swelling after undergoing 12 hours of surgery Sunday night. Harris was flown to an Anchorage hospital on Friday after suffering a stroke while unloading his boat at a port on St. Paul Island, Alaska.

According to Jake & Josh the “good signs” exhibited by their father included were squeezing their hands and barking orders at doctors and nurses, such as “Don’t f–k up!”.

Both his sons Jake and Josh, who have also featured along with their father in the daring exploits, were quoted as stating that even as their father continues to make a speedy recovery from the stroke that he suffered on Friday they remain “encouraged but still very cautious.”

Since the Cornelia Marie is currently in the middle of the 2010 opilio crab fishing season — which will be seen on Deadliest Catch’s sixth season later this year — the boat has resumed fishing without Harris and is being helmed by relief captain Derek Ray, a family friend.
