From the BBC news site

Quote

A UK-flagged cargo ship with 25 crew has been seized by pirates off Somalia, media reports say.
The Asian Glory was taken 620 miles (1,000km) off the Horn of Africa nation's coast, the Bulgarian foreign ministry said.
The vessel, which has a multi-national crew, is the second UK-flagged ship hijacked in days, after chemical tanker the St James Park was seized on Monday.
The waters around Somalia are among the most dangerous in the world.
As well as eight Bulgarians, the other nationalities making up the Asian Glory's crew are said to include Ukrainians, Romanians and Indians.
British officials said there were no UK nationals on board the vessel.
The exact time and location of the hijacking are not yet clear.
The 13,000-tonne ship was reportedly transporting cars from Singapore to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
It is estimated the ship could take up to three days to reach the Somali coast, from where pirates usually hold ransom talks.
The St James Park, which has 26 crew from nine different countries, is currently anchored off the Somali coast, where negotiations for its release are expected to start.
Correspondents say the upsurge in piracy in the region is a consequence of the failure to find a solution to Somalia's continuing political disarray.

I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....

....... on the bright side, they might be on double pay.

And all that time theyll get laid up in somalia, they'll be able to catch up with their planned maintenance.

Hi Paul

Question - Have any Russian Ships been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden
Answer - No

Why not?, because the Russians would do just as you've described above.

Old story from Beirut back in the 80's:

Quote

The Islamic Liberation Organisation (ILO) kidnapped four Soviet diplomats from the Soviet Embassy in Beirut, one diplomat being the Embassy's medical officer.

The ILO castrated and executed the Soviet doctor and the Soviet Ambassador requested assistance from the KGB who sent a team to Beirut.

The KGB team rounded up and captured dozens of ILO personnel, including the ILO's leader's brother, whom the KGB castrated and shot dead. Then they, the KGB team, sent back to the ILO leader his brother's testicles in a box, with the ultimatum that if the remaining Soviet personnel were not released immediately, they, the KGB, would execute a captured ILO operative every hour, or something like that.

The remaining three Soviet diplomatic personnel were released and found on the streets of Beirut the same day as the message going out (something like 30 or 60 minutes after the ultimatum being sent).

What is also interesting is who broke the story, because the Soviets kept the matter very much to themselves. It was Israeli intelligence sources who broke the story to the world's media. Mossad sources made a statement that was picked up in the world's media about the incident, which statement could barely contain the Israelis' admiration and glee at the KGB's action against Hezbollah saying that "this [action] was what Hezbollah understands". The Mossad sources' statement implicitly contrasted the Soviets' actions with those of the United States in which they, the Mossad, said that the Soviets don't engage in anti-terrorist rhetoric but simply act, whereas "other countries" engage in much anti-terrorist rhetoric but conduct little anti-terrorist action. However, one must remember this was in 1985 and matters have changed since then.

There are a few navies in tthe gulf of aden patrolling, but thats all they do.  (apart from the indian navy who blew one out o the water a while back).

When we came thru last year (british ship with 60 brits and dutch onboard) , we just locked all the doors.

I hear another of our ships removed their external steps and ran razor wire around the ship
