Friday, 23 October 2009 14:26
FIVE people were rescued from the waters just outside Belfast harbour this afternoon after a fishing vessel caught fire.
The vessel Amity reported the fire on board the Bellatrix after picking 5 people from water. The crew of the Amity then took them to Milewater Basin for medical attention. No further information is yet available as to their condition.
The fishing vessel Bellatrix continues to burn whilst drifting slowly eastwards around 500 yards offshore at the Belfast end of Belfast Lough.
The RNLI Bangor Inshore Lifeboat is keeping the vessel under observation which is providing vital information for the Coastguard and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Fishermen rescued from NI boat fire

Five fishermen were forced to dive overboard today after fire engulfed their vessel as it sailed out of Belfast Lough.

The men were taken to the Royal Victoria hospital after being rescued from the freezing waters by another boat.

The Bellatrix vessel was still ablaze this evening and a 300-metre exclusion zone has been put in place around it amid fears that three gas canisters and a 300-litre diesel load could yet cause further explosions.

The vessel, which is registered in Kilkeel, is drifting toward the Co Down side of the coastline and police have cordoned off sections of the shore to prevent people gathering in the area.

Coastguard spokesman Mark Clarke said emergency services were allowing the fire to burn out.

“There’s just too great a risk of anyone going near it. This must have been a catastrophic fire that took hold very quickly.”

The boat had just left the harbour when the fire started around 1pm.

Mr Clarke said four of the five fishermen were released from hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation.

Burning vessel goes down in lough

A fishing boat which burst into flames while drifting in Belfast Lough has sunk.

Five crew members had to be rescued from the water when they abandoned the Bellatrix after it caught fire.

Part of the coastal path at Cultra in County Down was closed by police over fears that gas canisters onboard the vessel could explode.

However, as a fire control vessel began to spray water on the stricken fishing boat, it disappeared beneath the waves.

A 300-metre exclusion zone was put in place around the vessel as it has 300 litres of diesel and three gas canisters onboard.

The Coastguard said they had been waiting for the fire onboard the boat, which is registered in Kilkeel, to burn out.

Spokesman Mark Clarke said crew members from the boat were rescued from the sea by another vessel, the Amity, which was nearby when the fire broke out at about 1300 BST on Friday.

He said the vessel had just left port to begin fishing when the fire broke out.

The crew were brought to shore and were then taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where their condition is stable.

So sad to see a good boat like that.  She used to be my dads boat about 6 years ago before being sold to Kyle, and renamed.  We had named her Shannoa G, she was renamed the Bellatrix on arrival in Kyle.
