Council urged to erect screen around trawlers

CRITICISM ILL-FATED SHIPS LEFT EXPOSED

ARKLOW TOWN Council has been criticised for its inaction over the issue of ill-fated trawlers Maggie B and Pere Charles which have been left in Arklow Harbour for more than 18 months while investigations into their sinking are ongoing.

Branding the council 'insensitive, thoughtless and disrespectful', local election candidate Dave Thomas Fox has slammed the council for 'staying quiet' on the matter.

'Out of decency and respect to the fishermen, their families and friends and the people of Arklow and Wexford, the Council could have erected some sort of screen to protect the boats and keep them from public view over two years. While the DPP and gardaí prevented the boats being moved, the Council could have stepped in build a temporary structure that would have taken the boats out of view and at the same time prevented anyone from getting near them, while the investigation took place,' he told The Wicklow People.

'I now call on Arklow Town Council to take action, and erect a screen now, until the trawlers can be moved and or disposed of,' he added.

Unfortunately that situation is par for the course I'm afraid. The Solway Harvester has been berthed in Douglas harbour for all to see for over nine years now.

I wonder why she hasn't either been scrapped or sold? - this was a quote from Harbours director Captain Michael Brew: 'The vessel is now owned by the Department of Transport as the previous owner has transferred it to us at no cost'.
