Thanks for your help markh
All files should have the correct permissions already, hard to check the php.ini as the hosts are pulling a houdini act with it being the weekend.
It would appear that the theme was somewhere using the ip of the old shared server - but only to load the javascript files for some reason. It would have helped if the hosts let us know when they were going to switch servers - our cpanel is registering we are still on the old server but it is obvious that we're on dedicated now. At no stage was the site running slow for me (my cache must have had the requested files in it and therefore no timeouts) - I thought it was all in peoples imaginations ;-) Any tech stuff in the future fire it my way.
Oh and I don't wear an anorak either - although I do have a pair of big square thick glasses.

hi barry it's xander tryed everything but still running very slow sometimes takes as much as a minuite and a half for basic changes
much better here now, but made it better still, and this might work for you, go to your profile, then click on the look/layout preferences on the left
you should see 'current theme, with a link next to it to change themes
click on the next one down - SMF Default Theme - Core
then just to be on the safe side, log out and then back in and see what gives
the machine I had here that was duff, is now whizzing along and not throwing errors... might be worth a try

Some learn by reading, some ask questions, others observe...but there's always one who has to pee on an electric fence for himself.
