Isle of Man by-laws aim to stop 'unsustainable' scallop fishing

Related Stories By-laws have been proposed by the Isle of Man government in an attempt to stop "unsustainable" levels of Irish Sea Queen Scallop fishing.
The measures include a weekend trawling ban and an 18:00 to 06:00 curfew on overnight fishing in Manx waters.
They would also see tighter controls of the type of fishing gear allowed to limit the size of catches.
Fisheries minister Phil Gawne said the volume of Queen Scallops caught in 2011 and 2012 was "unsustainable".
He added: "It is not easy to balance the sometimes conflicting needs of the industry with the responsibility to ensure that stocks are managed sustainably so that this fishery flourishes for the long term."
More than 3% of the Manx seabed is currently protected from trawling and dredging.
The areas which have seen a complete ban include Baie ny Carrickey, Port Erin, Douglas, Laxey, Niarbyl and Ramsey Marine Nature Reserve.
Manx territorial waters extend out to 12 miles around its coastline.
More information about the new by-laws, which will go to Tynwald in June, is available online.
