just watched a programme about gannets/sea etc on bbc2. 8pm 9pm.
the latest brainwave theyre going to come out with next is to stop prawn boats discarding their by-catch,
small fish etc,, dont know what theyre supposed to do with it, bring it ashore, then pay special lorries to collect it perhaps,,
how theyre going to police it  god knows???
probably have to take an observer with them and pay his wages,,,,
just when you think youve heard it all,

the way I understood is that the Gannet population is thriving - mainnly because of the discards they scoff as they are shovelled overboard and the greeny twitchers enviro-mentalists are concerned that if discards are stopped that the gannets will suffer

case of wanting it all ways possible at our expense

We have had observers aboard the boat   here in New Zealand monitoring sea bird strikes on the warps and birds getting trapped between the warp and the water. Had no casualties with the dynex warps.

Google 'TORI LINE'    At present smaller trawlers are not required to carry a seabird mitigation device in New Zealand. no doubt that will change in the near future.  Rick Burch.  FV Nancy Glen.  NZ.
