FIVE crewmen from the Banff registered fishing vessel Transcend were airlifted to safety after their vessel sank 100 miles northeast of Lerwick in the early hours of this morning.

The crew, three men from the Northeast and two from the Philippines, are all said to be well.

Aberdeen Coastguard was first alerted by 10pm last night when the Transcend started talking in water near the North Cormorant oil field.

Shetland Coastguard was then requested to scramble the search and rescue helicopter 102 to take pumps to the vessel.

By that time three of the five crew members had already been taken to the standby vessel Ocean Ness while the remaining two crew members continued their efforts to save the vessel.

When the helicopter arrived at the scene the Transcend was already waterlogged. The remaining two crew members were also taken to the standby vessel and the Transcend sank at 0.45am.

SAR 102 airlifted all five off the Ocean Ness, refuelled on the nearby Eider platform and arrived back at Sumburgh at 1.25am.

The five fishermen were met by a man from the fishermen's mission who took them to Lerwick for overnight accommodation.

Fishermen saved from sinking boat

Five fishermen were rescued from a Banff-registered boat after it began taking on water off Shetland.

The alarm was raised at about 2200 BST on Wednesday when the crew of the Transcend ran into difficulties.

The crew was airlifted to Sumburgh by the Shetland Coastguard rescue helicopter. None of the five was injured.

A spokesman for Aberdeen Coastguard said the Transcend later sank at about 0120 BST.

Five rescued from sinking Banff trawler
Drama as five flee stricken Banff trawler

Published: 04/06/2009

FIVE people on a Banff-registered trawler had to be rescued after their boat began taking in water in the North Sea.

The crew from the Banff-registered Transcend scrambled on to rescue crafts before their trawler sank.

They were 270 miles north-east of Aberdeen when the skipper raised the alarm.

Three of the crew boarded a fast-rescue craft sent from a nearby oil platform while the other two tried in vain to save the boat by clearing the water.

The men left the vessel about midnight – two hours after the alarm was raised – and the 75ft boat sank 100 miles North-east of Lerwick soon afterwards.

An RAF Rescue 100 helicopter was sent from Stornoway and the five men were taken off the standby vessels to Shetland. No one was injured.

An Aberdeen Coastguard spokeswoman said: “They did their best to save the vessel but it got to the point where it wasn’t safe to stay on.”

It was the second incident to hit the boat.

Five years ago, six fishermen had to be airlifted from the same trawler after a fire broke out onboard while it was 40 miles North-west of Scrabster.

The crew were rescued that time by a coastguard helicopter.

Saw them on the news earlier. Pity to lose the boat - sure I've seen her in KLB some time - but pleased they all got off okay. Can always build a new boat.

FIVE north east fishermen were lucky to be alive yesterday (Thursday) after being rescued from their sinking vessel, 100 miles north east of Lerwick.

The Banff-registered Transcend sank near the North Cormorant oil platform at 0.45am.

Yesterday morning skipper Neil Robertson, from Portknockie, engineer Ian Rigby, and crewmen John Lawson, Rito B Cueto and Welly Viajedor, all from Buckie, described their last minutes on the vessel and spoke of their gratitude towards the rescue services.

The five men escaped with just the clothes they were wearing and this morning they had to be newly kitted out at the LHD shop, in Lerwick, before organising flights to Aberdeen.

Shetland coastguard search and rescue helicopter SAR102 was scrambled at around 10pm on Wednesday to take pumps to the stricken vessel, but ended up airlifting the crew as their vessel went down.

Engineer Ian Rigby said: "We were fishing last night and were just shooting our nets. I went down to check the engine because the bilge alarm had gone off.

"We put on a pump off the main engine and decided to heave the nets. Then we put down a small portable pump to help the situation, but the water just kept rising.

"The skipper put out a Mayday and we transferred three crew to the nearby Ocean Ness standby vessel."

Mr Rigby and skipper Robertson stayed on board and continued trying to save their fishing boat.

Mr Rigby said: "We are feeling pretty depressed this morning. We were just about to get a new generator. We liked the ship and the fishing was good. We just hoped we would be able to pump her out again.

"We put the two Filipinos and the older guy off to the Ocean Ness, just in case. But there was not much we could do. It started in the engine room, but then the cabins started filling up with water.

"The water was getting up and she started to get heavy and it was time to go," he said.

They escaped from the Transcend into a small speed boat launched by the Ocean Ness. All five were then airlifted from the oil standby vessel and flown to Shetland where they were met by a volunteer from the fishermen's mission.

Describing the last minutes on the vessel, skipper Robertson said: "We tried our best but it didn't work out.

"I would like to thank all the folk that helped the guys on the Ocean Ness, on the Cormorant Alpha and coastguard - they all did a very good job," he said.

I was talking to a friend in the pub the other night and he told me how he'd been involved in doing an ROV survey of the wreck of the Transcend last week - apparently it's fairly close to a pipeline.

He says she's lying on her side with the nets safely would round their drum. I didn't think to ask if he kept any of the imagery but I will when I see him next.

Synopsis

The fishing vessel Transcend was in the process of shooting her trawl gear when at around 2050 on 3 June 2009 the crew became aware of flooding in the engine room. Despite employing the vessel’s two bilge pumps and a portable submersible pump, the flooding continued to increase, and at 2145 the skipper issued a “Mayday”, to which a nearby emergency response and rescue vessel (ERRV) and another fishing vessel diverted. The three deckhands were evacuated shortly afterwards into a liferaft and then onto the ERRV. An additional portable pump was transferred from the other fishing vessel, but this could not be started, and the flooding continued to deteriorate, spreading to the cabin. Once main engine power and then generator power had been lost, the skipper and engineer abandoned to a daughter craft from the ERRV. The vessel capsized to starboard, sinking by the stern around 10 minutes later at 2346. The uninjured crew were winched off the ERRV by Coastguard helicopter and airlifted to Shetland. Although the crew had observed water appearing to enter the engine room through hull planking in way of the starboard fuel tanks, the initial cause of the flooding was not able to be confirmed.

Action taken:

The Deputy Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the vessel’s owner/skipper advising him to review and adopt the guidance provided by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in MGN 165(F) to minimise the risks of flooding on any fishing vessels he may own in the future.

I know this is an old topic but I thought thi swas relevent.

A friend of mine has done two paintings of the Transcend based upon his observations when he was part of a team performing an ROV survey of the wreck.

You can find them on his website here: The Container Gallery
