A MEMORIAL plaque to a much-loved Grimsby fishermen that was stolen by callous thieves has been reinstated on what would have been his 30th birthday.

As reported, Janet Melin, 59, of Joseph Street, Grimsby, was left heartbroken after discovering the plaque had been ripped from its location near the banks of the River Freshney two weeks ago.

Friends and relatives of the late Dean Melin, had arranged for both the plaque and a memorial bench at the Duke Of York Gardens since the father-of-three died as a result of complications caused by his diabetes in February 2011.

And on Saturday the tribute was replaced, after £105 was raised by his loved ones.

Janet said: "I am so relieved that the plaque is going back on but I am still a little worried that it will get stolen like the other one.

"I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped us raise the money needed.

"It would have been his 30th birthday and he is missed every minute of every day.

"The plaque is outside of his regular fishing peg where he spent a lot of time.

"Even though it was probably kids that stole it and didn't realise what they were doing, it has affected the whole family.

"It just feels right for it to be back."

Dean's son Connor, 9, of Columbia Road, Grimsby said: "I came to see my father's plaque put back up because it is important.

"We are also celebrating his birthday, so we brought balloons. I was very upset when it was stolen but it will be OK now it is back up."

Dean's aunt Carol Kelson, 56, from Grimsby added: "We all pitched in to raise money because we were gutted when the plaque was stolen.

"We all feel better it is back to the way it was."
