Can anyone give me anymore info about launching at Mallaig slip? I have read the info on Boatlaunch uk which says the slip is 1/2 tidal but the picture doesn't show the bottom of the slip. Is there anywhere else to launch with a 4X4 or can you run off the bottom of the slip onto the beach or hard gravel outside the 1/2 tidal times?

We are going there next weekend and are hoping to launch two 6 metre Ribs.

Any info appreciated.

there's 2 or 3 slips at mallaig

one just before mallaig boat builders. the slip its self is only wet a couple an hour or so either side of HW, but most folks drive onto the small beachy bit (hard mud/shingle) and launch that way.  thats probable the best bet in mallaig and is the one most folks use

another further around past the boat builders is HW only affair and needs serious reversing skils as there's a bend half way down, there's another at the other side of the bay that's much the same

decent slip at arisaig marine, not sure of the charges though which is a few miles to the south, you can drive onto the beach at Traigh by the golf course and launch there if you've a 4x4

the one at morar is on the maillag side of the bridge,

couple of slips on the south shore of Loch Aillort and a decent one at Glenuig as well

yup, its probably easier off high water when you can drive off the ramp on to the foreshore anyway, its very sheltered too buildings on both sides so no cross winds when recovering and any swell that might have been coming in will be long gone by the time it gets to that bit

this is the fore shore bit on a very low tide, ramp would be out of shot on the right

This picture is of the tide about as low as it gets, the beach has an access slipway designed and used regularly by 4x4s to launch boats off thier trailers.

Seen the spots mentioned - too long since I've seen them ,so I won't comment ,except to say - on Google maps, how do you get onto the beach between the old slip and the pier , and the one just past the village hall ( opposite "Bayview"/down hill from chez mcMinn for those that know it ), seems like a good bet at part tide . But then , I only get up there once in a blue moon -so  could be missing something .
Then thought come round to glasnacardoch beach - or is that now impossible.
And last but not least - the Marine Hotel used to have a slip ( memory says somewhere between the harbour and Glasnacardoch ) ( possibly seaward of the old railway hall), -does it still exist or been done away with with the new road ?

Or is this just me having a "Senior" moment . :D :)

you can just about see the ramp from the road on google maps for the small beach between the slip and the pier.  That area has been decked for the tourists to sit and hoy chips at the seagulls, but you can still drive down easy enough.

next one along comes straight up onto the road, if that the one your meaning

have a look at http://geograph.org.uk and do a search for mallaig.  hundreds of pics there that might jog a few memories

First one looks ( from google )to be between the tourist place and the old slipway -never noticed it last summer ,but it looked to be tight . ( I've stick up a photo of the now decked area from the 60's for interest)
Second one ,heading East Bay way , if you take house opposite the village hall as first ( the one that till the 70's was the telephone exchange) ,go to the third -there's a slip opposite ,but I suspect it still needs some water ,as there 's a bit of a drop to the beach .
Had a good look on Google for the other slip ( as I said it was the marine hotel one ) used for the three boats ,the two Scots( Royal & Queen ) and the Blaven ,but I couldn't see any sign .  Nothing on that site you mentioned-thought someone living there would help out . ;)
