Tynemouth as the name suggests sits at the mouth of the River Tyne (North East England). This is about a mile from North Shields and as you can see from the satellite view below has a pier which is reasonable weather is open to the public. Good for taking shots of vessels entering into and out of the Port of Tyne.

Points highlighted by the red numbers are:

1. Knotts Flats Car Park - there is a charge for the car park but if you stay with your car, why bother! - good views over the Black Middens and vessels coming down the Tyne. Good views over North Shields Fish Quay.

2. This is the Spanish Battery Car Park - used to be a defensive point for the entry into the Port and at one time was guarded by Spanish Mercenaries during Napoleonic times, later used as a World War 1 and 2 gun emplacement. There is a charge for the car park but good views over the entry into the Tyne with panorama's over the Tynemouth Castle and Priory together with the South Shields coast line.

3. Tynemouth Pier - about a mile long, the Pier is open in reasonable weather, any high seas and it is closed for safety reasons. Worth the walk to the end as you can get up close to vessels without land/buildings in the background. Car parking (chargeable) at the bottom of the bank as you come down from Tynemouth Front Street.

4. Tynemouth Castle and Priory - a charge to get in but well worth it. Used as a Gun Emplacement during both World Wars, many fishermen are also buried in its grounds.

5. Tynemouth Front Street - plenty of car parking (charge applies) with lots of pubs and eateries.

6. Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch Tower.

A good day/night out can be had in Tynemouth - plenty of hotels, B&B's etc around.

Aye Davey - it hasn't come out too well - just to the North East of number 6 - look hard enough and you can just about make it out  :buck2:
