I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....

Lets hope the "b -  eurotwats " in Brussels listen to the Industry.

Whats the latest from the skipper in Newlyn who refuses to dump one more fish?  There was a very good article in the Sunday Mail a couple of weeks ago.

If i can find it, i'll upload it

lochhead just quoted on the scottish news there stating he's managed to get the issue included in the upcoming quota talks,
aye right, he'll be told "you just sit there boy and keep your trap shut, then smile when its over and read the following,

" we got a pretty good deal for the scottish fleet considering the alternatives, we held our own in the face of tough opposition and we managed to get it down to a barter system, lithuania, latvia, poland etc will only be allowed to fish in scottish waters outside the one mile limit on 358 days of the year, we put our foot down and the swiss will be excluded for 2009 and won't be allowed rights till 2010. we've also managed to get some changes which will deal with the discards issue which will please the scottish fleet, the legal mesh size for codends will be 280mm from jan 1st 2009 and there will be a slight increase in the size of square mesh panels, they will now be four fathoms or 33feet long with the mesh being 300mm square."

"all in all more proof of the high esteem this labour government has for its fishing industry" just whats on the script boy, just whats on the script!!!!

its bloody gunboats and an exclusion zone like the icelandics have that we need, either that or subcontract a price for discards with the mainland europe industrial trawler fleets, and f**k things up right, "skeeper, you er een my nets, you are een my nets, stop now"
And their teeth will be blunted like lions and they will be cast away on whirlwinds and such!!!!

Defra and HM Gov announce the loss, in the post, of a CD rom containing very sensitive information regarding further sh1t for the fishermen of these shores. A spokesperson said "How the feck did qw get hold of it? It's word blxxdy perfect."
If you tremble indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine.

Brilliant QW,bang on.The key words in what you said about our dear and revered government ministers are "we held our own"....they've been holding their own for years now, that's why they're a bunch of wa**ers !!!

Some learn by reading, some ask questions, others observe...but there's always one who has to pee on an electric fence for himself.

i was in the newly refurbished chemist shop this morning, its been extended and now has ailse with shelving on either side, i was in to collect some prescriptions and had to stand in a short queue, i was absent mindedly browsing the contents of the shelf to my right while i waited patiently, don't ask what was on the shelf, womens hair dye or something, it was the conversation coming from the other side of the row of shelves that caught my attention. Two voices discussing the discards issue, thats interestin i thought, its not often you hear ordinary landlubbers taking an interest in the fishing industry? i tried to follow the conversation but as there were still workmen in the shop putting finishing touches to the shop fitting there was a lot of background noise. "discards won't do, we'll have to think of something better" said one voice, "i know" replied the other "but what do you suggest would be a better idea? its not as if they've really much choice" oh good i thought, someone that understands the difficulties involved in the process.
"i don't know" said the first voice "maybe we should look somewhere else?" WHAT? i thought, perhaps they were fishermen, i'd noticed a big boat moored at the new quay earlier that morning, i had intended to take my camera with me when i went out for my physio later on but i forgot, thats another story. i didn't get a good look at the boat but she looked like she was maybe a research boat of some sort, she was about 35m or so and had a big stern trawler look about her, there wasn't the big shutes and pumps etc that you'd see on one of the big pursers but i thought perhaps she was a trawler or maybe there was another boat lying at the front of the other quay i hadn't noticed. by this time i was at the front of the queue and was quickly served, stuck my big bag oh peels in my bag and turned to leave, whereupon i came face to face with the two mystery voices, were they fishermen? unfortunately no, just two irish tourists trying to select a birthday gift for someone!!!!
And their teeth will be blunted like lions and they will be cast away on whirlwinds and such!!!!

Hi everyone.

I'm looking at fish discards for my final year project at university and wondered if anyone would be willing to answer some questions that I have about the situation as it is? Everyone I've spoken to about this issue seems to feel very strongly about it and at the moment I'm trying to redesign a trawler net to make it more selective.

If anyone doesn't mind answering a few questions could you PM me as it would really help me out.

Cheers.

Dan
