Fishing Plan "Bombshell" Condemned

Scottish fishing leaders say EU proposals to close a substantial area of the west coast to commercial fishing have come as an industry bombshell.

The measures, set to be introduced next year from west of Shetland, would hit important species such as cod, haddock and whiting.

The European Commission said the move was vital to protect stocks.

Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead said he hoped the worst of the measures could be seen off in negotiations.

The measures affect waters at depths less than 200 metres and will also affect prawn fisherman who also catch white fish.

Many fishing vessels will go to the wall because if they can't fish in the traditional fishing grounds where else can they go?

Kenneth Patterson, from the European Commission, said: "The situation is serious enough that the scientific committees concerned have advised a closure or reduction to the lowest possible level for cod, haddock and whiting.

"Having said that, our intentions would be to let the largest part of fishing activity, that doesn't catch cod, haddock and whiting, continue with as little impact as possible."

Fishing boat skipper James Reid, from Fraserburgh, said: "There are a lot of little islands and this fish is their only source of income so to close that is a disaster."

George MacRae, from the Scottish White Fish Producers' Association, said: "It's a bombshell. Communities will really struggle. Many fishing vessels will go to the wall because if they can't fish in the traditional fishing grounds where else can they go?

"Some of these boats might well come into the North Sea, creating more pressure on stocks that we are trying to do so much to conserve and regenerate at the moment."
I always see both sides of the argument, the one that's wrong and mine.....

having got wind of this through my p.o. i can still hardly believe the commisions audacity. i have a simpler plan for area VIa-if theres a problem with over fishing leave it to the islands that have the territorial rights to it-uk/ireland and let the rest of them clear off.
bend it,and if you can`t bend it,break it.

Just another nail in the fishermans coffin  :-X..........we fish West of Shetland most of the year so will affect us badly if it happens, worrying times ahead by the looks of things.

why doesn't he do his job and just tell them, yes close the area, to all non UK boats only and include all the flag of convenience boats in the ban too. why do these things always seem to hit UK boats worst? its never been a level playing field, we used to get at least three or four Spanish boats hauled before the local court every year and Campbeltown would have been at the bottom of the list when it came to ports that they would get escorted into, i can't remember the last time this happened, must be ten years or more and its not because they stopped fishing in our waters i'm quite sure!!!

The British Government should have taken a leaf out of the Icelandic book and stuck a limit on all UK waters thirty five years ago, where does the research come from leads to such a decision? how important is the 200m depth bit of the report? if closures are restricted to areas under this depth then it would affect the inshore fleet in the whole Clyde and Inner Hebrides, but its not something i have any knowledge of for a lot of other areas having never been north of Oban? If waters under this depth were closed then it would mean a complete closure of the whole Clyde and North Channel, as well as the whole West coast, East and West of Islay, Jura etc.

typical tho at a time when the people best placed to know the state of stocks, you, the men that work in these areas, are all saying that stocks are plentiful, the powers that be, using research that in all likeliehood is as much as five years old can decide that such drastic action should be taken.

something like this is a perfect opportunity for our first minister to stand up and support the industry, you might think he is powerless and under present conditions he probably is? but some action is better than non at all so email him, the more emails he gets the better placed he would be to speak out against this action. here is his direct email address, this gets straight to him.

wonder what the reaction would be if the whole fleet turned up on the french and spaniard's doorsteps? they wouldn't be able to stop you, not if france is like spain, there are more fishery officers in peterhead than in the whole of spain, and i suspect that the UK have more fishery protection boats than the rest of the EC put together too. further to my previous comment does anyone know the last time a boat from without the UK and republic fleets was prosecuted for breaking the rules? the last boat i can remember being done locally was an irish boat from portavogie i think who was done for towing in an area closed as it was apparantly a spawning ground, i can't remember the exact geographical area but i do recall it being somewhere where anyone could have been caught out without knowing, why it was suddenly deemed an area fit for closure or why it had been designated as a spawning ground i do not know, but i do remember thinking that i'd never seen a cod there in my lifetime, spawning or otherwise, unless things have drastically changed the cod "season" such that it is lasts two weeks in the clyde, if your lucky, and its not even a fishery that is likely to produce anything like the return that whitfish boats would consider viable, 5-6 boxes in a single tow being quite a good mark, most i ever caught for a full 36hrs fishing was 43 boxes, and that was with a big net by clyde standards, towing where we shouldn't have been, i'd often seen a seine netter work that patch and gave it a try.
all beside the point, i suspect that the news was released so that it would get lost in the ridiculous brand and ross fiasco, i didn't notice gordon brown coming out and condeming this plan, or 15 MP's tabling a motion against it, but two comics joking about one of them shagging the granddaughter of an average actor who is most famous for playing a thick spanish waiter? its a spanish joke alright and the fishing industry is the butt of the joke, nobody is up in arms about you lot getting shafted, the sun isn't paying you to tell its readers how outraged and violated you feel, is that not what interests the newspaper readers? here is a perfect story, EC CFP plans f uck thousands, f uck them so hard they'll end up against a wall, but hey, don't worry, if the news depresses you theres plans to get you off the benefits you'll end up on and train you to get a new job, doing what exactly in all the coastal towns who rely on the industry as a major employer i don't know, but i'm sure gordon will be working on it, NOT!!! if your town is like this one then just as the last of the fleet is forced to tie up you'll notice the local farmers driving new cars, i see them all the time here, they are so poor they can only afford one new £50,000 tractor and £30,000 pick up a year!! this kind of thing is the equivilent of mad cow or foot and mouth, will you see compensation packages getting handed out? no chance, they'll say its to ensure the future of the industry, ok, so it might well do that, only trouble is it won't be the UK fleet that benefits, without a fleet to harvest any benefits we can always use the UK share to allow the brand new fleets our neighbours are building with government assistance, free reign to work right up to your doorstep, remember all that talk about blockades earlier in the year? if not for this, then what? i've just read a book about the swordfishermen of gloucester Mass. who have to steam thru grounds less than a dozen miles from port, five or six days steam out to the grand banks into international waters before they can fish, why? because the sea on their doorstep is judged as being canadian, thats like having the whole irish sea as belonging to france!!! it could happen
