SPARTAN

SEEN IN THE IRVINE MARITIME MUSEUMS FLOATING PONTOON
Built in 1942 as VIC 18, at Hay’s Shipyard in Kirkintilloch on the Forth and Clyde Canal she was one of the last VIC to be
built during World War Two. Designed to carry large cargoes they were perfect for this purpose. The ‘Spartan’ was returned to J & J Hay at the end of the war and she continued the Puffer trade until
1974 when she was sold to the Greenlight Shipping Company. In 1980 she was withdrawn from service and was laid up at
Bowling Basin.
