Silver Birch FR39 frames slotted for dry fit on keel

Silver Birch FR39 frames slotted for dry fit on keel

Slots cut in lower half of frames for dry fit to keel and to check for orientation. This is necessary to check the smooth flowing lines of the hull to avoid any unwanted bumps and hollows. It is also at this stage I calculate the amount of bevelling necessary on the outer surface of the frames to align with adjacent frames.
In designing the interior of frames 3 and 4, I have allowed for a more powerful 540 motor to be installed inverted and therefore as low as possible.  I did this on the Girl Jean, installing the motor aligned to the correct prop shaft angle. The motor mounting plate is then attached to the transverse deck timbers via brass brackets. This arrangement works well and also helps to keep the centre of gravity low. The motor can still be replaced without tears.
