Caledonia PD160

Caledonia PD160

Caledonia PD160. Built at Macduff 1937, for Rob Forman, founder of Caledonian Fishselling co. of Peterhead (now Caley). My late father joined her on leaving school .. under skipper Bill Thain. He came ashore, unable to get over seasickness. She was lost with all hands on the West Coast in 1951. No radar then, and a day of heavy snow showers. Generally accepted that she struck a reef between Eigg and the mainland, near Ardnamurchan, known as the Faskadale Rocks. That's the reason there's a sectored light on Eigg .. to steer clear of them.
I remember my father telling me she had a National main engine, and also a 30 hp engine with a small prop coming out the port side aft, for shooting drift nets!!

Interesting info gee bee, there is a green light on the Faskadale rocks now.It has been there as long as i can remember, maby some of the older guys will have a year for it going there if not im sure Stevei Hightower will look it up for us.
I think she went into Ullapool with a shot of herring. No price, so set out for Mallaig. Same situation, so left for Oban, and never arrived. I remember the buoy.
Bob some fellows in Mallaig maintained she never got as far as Faskadale I remember John Smith the Spindrift saying he picked up bits&peaces out of her when they were looking for her, Arisaig point. Sad men trying to make a living.
Thanks. Sad story. Think they recovered some of the men's bodies near Sleat Pt. about a week later.
