RACING RINGERS-TWO

RACING RINGERS-TWO

Other half of a pic referred to in the pic of Catherine Anne submitted by Big Douglas

This is the Maid racing back into Tarbert at seafood festival time 1980. Catherine Anne was storming along behind

Have scanned in two halves from an enlargement as I no longe have a smaller print and its too much hassle to dig out the negs and reprint

My daughter is going to Photoshop them and join them together electronically, with luck

Meanwhile, ehre it is in two bits!

Hi Jay, great picture all together.  You could feel the tension.  Was the maid faster than the Catherine Ann or did she just start ahead.  they were both well shaped for speed.  Just wondering if the CA went up past or did she have to be content with second?

    Hi OB34
    Dunno which was the faster
Doubtless Big Douglas and The Count would have clamed to have the faster boat
    Both were very fast
    I just don't know
Douglas, can you answer that one, or any of the Jacksons who inhabit this site
In this pic the pair were hurtling towards Tarbert entrance and were' I think, abreast of or just past the outer pier and had to slow down immediately after they hurtled past me with feet to spare, meaning that CA never got past the Maid
What makes the pic for me is the wee girl with her arms in the air making a double thumbs-up sign?
    It's as if she's saying: "Wa-a-a-ay, we're the winner!"
    Cheers

Might be wrong Jay,but I think the smart money would be on the Maid .She could go like a train with the 270 Volvo yon lady.Had a wee race one time with Charlie Robertson's  Aliped V111 coming away from Colonsay pier, his 310 Kelvin and our 330 Cummins going to the neck, and they were romping along at a steady 12 kts. according to his Navstar.Just shows the speed the Nobles hull could make when they had the power in them.I know the later Weatherhead's had wider sterns and wouldnae draw down so much when they were steaming, but personally I think the Maid would have shown her a clean pair of heels(I'm gonnae be left with a hellish eggy face if she couldnae though :police:!!)

    hi Ronnie
I've got lines drawings of both types, plus the models and I would have to agree with you
The Noble hull has a finer run aft so, combine that with a sharper entry than late Weatherheads and the answer becomes clearer, basically regardless of power
Both are terrific designs and of course have their respective pluses and minuses and thank goodness some of both are still around!

Hi both, thanks for answering the question, I know that nothing in Mallaig could touch the Maid.... She was extremely fast due in part to the power but really she did not push much water or drag.  My uncles boat (Pathfinder) did not need much power to shift on.  At that time he had 230 Gardner and would out perform similar size boats with bigger engines.  Now you mentioned the Aliped V111, I heard so much about their speed but I have never seen her?  Do you have any picks.  One question I did have was I was aboard a boat called the Rona from PD, was she one of the Alipeds?

I think Jim Bruce from Peterhead had two called  Rona. He lost the 50 odd foot seiner of that name somewhere up the North West coast, then he had the Aliped 1X that he renamed Rona.

just back froma few days away
had no idea Alipex IX became Rona
    Is she still around?
Matha and Donna's wheelhouse design really was a work of art.

    agree
but so too was the flared style of the later Noble boaties ... such as aboard Prospector, Village Belle IV, Ribhinn Donn II, etc
