whitby cobles

one for the coble fans, late 60's I'd guess by the cars on the quayside

    Hi Mark

Nicely framed shot which in those days you had to manage from a cost perspective - how things have changed  :P

    Steve E.
One or two of these are still fishing. There's the Sea Harvest at the front, built by Gordon Clarkson late 50s, still in Whitby now with a wheelhouse (or garden shed) and working salmon nets. I think WY7 is now in Scarborough- might not be the same boat but there's one there with the same reg that's the same sort of size. WY201 was/is the Mayflower, she was sold north somewhere (might have been Hartlepool) and I think she's still in one piece. Good photo.
still nae joy wi info or a pic o the olympic coble that used to be fi amble then steve ?
I'm sure the locals commented that they couldn't place a Coble of that name - might be worth your while sending a quick email to the Coble and Keel Boat Society - see
http://www.coble-keelboatsociety.org/  - as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained  :P

    Hi Paul

The original question was a photograph of the Coble OLYMPIC which was at some stage thought to be fishing out of AMBLE.

whitby coble fath L WY 87   NOW at amble
The varnished coble in the middle of the picture, with the white tripod mast forrard was the Sea Vispur built by Gordon, and she was lost at the south side of Whitby High light at a place called the Clock case.
She washed ashore, there was a bit of swell at the time and helicopters found the occupants ashore next morning
the coble olympic fish't from northshields in late 70's to 80's own'd by john hogg {HOGGY} then it went to southshields
The two cobles on the outside of the jetty, just see their stems, are Silver Line WY.146 and the blue one is the old Sea Fisher WY.147, she was nipped by the steamboat in Whitby and replaced by the Sea Fisher, that was sold a couple of months ago in Hartlepool Marina, spent a couple of years working in each of them!
