50 odd stone bulk of pure root!!

Hopper full aboard the Kaylana SY21. Prawns were absolute poor quality and needless to say not a lot came out of it and one crewman jacked in.........for a couple of days!!

Usually we tended to chase the quality and tended to take the risk of working harder ground and round peaks if we know we'll get good stuff. Working with poor stuff is usually a last resort!!

A story springs to mind about Jim Bruce on the Rona(the Aliped 9)towing beside us at Gigha. We were getting a slack lift of beetles but still managing to tail 10 or 12 stone out of it.Jim shot for his second haul and after an hour down lifted again, boated it and put her head for the Islay Sound and the handle down. When I spoke to him on the wireless and asked what he got he told me a lift and a half for three stone of tails....his crew wouldnae look at yon dross, they just scutched it.We werenae that proud,we tailed them, but it was hard going and no very enjoyable work, but a pound was a pound to me!!......one man's meat and all that lol

We'd usually tail everything too since there was was a big enough crew to go through it this time, it was just that day I had the boat out because the skipper was off so we were shorthanded. Hauled the first haul for about 40st bulk and only managed to take 18st tails and two baskets of small live out of it then hauled after 4 hours for another 50st!! Ended up steaming in because one of the boys had enough! It takes a hell of a lot of bulk to fill the hopper on the Kaylana because it goes from the starboard side across the deck to the sorting table on the port side.
