day spring pd

Previously Maggie Cowe. Nearly wrecked behind East pier in Gamrie. William Morgan had her in PD. While driftnetting, a mine snagged on her gear and exploded, a few nets from the boat. No one injured .. it was said at the time she was so soft, that her "suppleness" saved her.  Got this story from my first skipper who was aboard her at the time with his uncle William. She had a paraffin engine, and no bulkhead between cabin and engineroom. Couldn't see your "neeper man" (shipmate) sometimes, across the cabin table!
Dayspring was burned in the South Bay PD at the Coronation celebrations. I remember standing on the pier (behind the boat), just over 5 yrs old, with my father. Someone had nailed a teddy bear to the top of her stem. I was upset at the thought of the bear being burnt. My father wisely told me they wouldn't burn the bear. I watched her burn from a bedroom window that night, and wondered if the bear had survived!! Vivid memory.
