    they had tugs that pushed them brian they didnt tow them like in dogsbody;s pic there was about 6 ov them 1 did go ashore at whitburn wen they had to let go in a northerly gale

    Hi Terry

    One of the Tyne Ash Barge was the Bessie Surtees, I think I've got some photographs somewhere and will try and dig them out. Those hoppers carried the waste (cinders etc) from the Tyne Power Stations (Stella and Newburn) to be dumped out on the NE Spoil Grounds. Owned by Stephenson Clarke. Others were the David Marley and Bobby Shaftoe.
