Two fishermen were rescued from a life raft 18 miles off the North Yorkshire coast today after their vessel caught fire.
At just before noon Humber Coastguard received a mayday call from fishing vessel Blejan Eyhre. The vessel was on fire 18 miles off the Filey coast and the crew of two had abandoned the vessel to a life raft. Flamborough Head RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and RAF rescue helicopter 128 from Leconfield were sent to the scene and Bridlington Coastguard secured the helicopter landing site.
The two crewmen were airlifted to safety from the life raft and were brought back to Bridlington. They did not require medical attention.
Humber Coastguard Watch Manager Graham Dawson said:
“This was a serious fire and the crew’s lives were probably saved by their handheld radio and the life raft they were carrying.”
“The unexpected does happen at sea and I’d advise all commercial crew to follow the Blejan Eyhre’s example and make sure you have essential safety equipment on board, like lifejackets, life rafts and communications equipment and that you know how to use it.”
