CRAYFISH GALORE

Crayfish is taken out of holding tanks and transfered to bins on the TE ARIKI today 14 Jan, 2009.
The vessel came to Wellington, NZ to land her catch.
The crayfish will be chilled down and exported live mainly to Asian markets.

    are these crays of average size craypot? or do they get bigger?

    These cray's would be about average but they do get bigger - the size shown in the photo would be the best eating as if they are too big the flavour isn't as good. Very tasty ! and very expensive. Most Kiwi's won't pay the export prices and choose to catch their own either diving or setting pots. Recreational fishers are only allowed to set three pots per person with a max of 6 per boat.I have seen film taken in 1925 on the south coast of Wellington with fishermen clearing their nets which are full of crays but with no market for them they would have dumped most of the catch - crays were seen as a problem.
