The old Greenhill Fish Market behind the Morning Dawn has now been knocked down to make way for some other development.Such a shame to see the market go.

    Hi gde

I had a walk through the former market when I was up there - bet it was full in its hay day - long gone now I suppose  ;D

    Steve E.
I worked as an engineer with a large locally owned fish factory/cold store when this market was in use.Every day it was full to the brim with white fish,1000s of boxes. To my dismay my old bosses used to buy maybe 4000 boxes a day for consignment to others in England and also buy 2000 boxes of round haddock (ungutted) for the battered and breadcrumb market. As well as that they purchased all the turbot that was landed,we then blast froze them whole, glazed with freezing water (to stop freezer burn) then put in wooden crates ready to be shipped off in Sealand containers to New York and surrounding areas where there was a great demand for very expensive fish. This Greenhill  market although now being demolished must have had millions of boxes of fish on its floor daily (but not on a Sunday, the sabbath)its ok Steve I dont go to church.
This market brought back many happy memories although hard.Something else will be built in its place no doubt.A little bit of history Steve.

    Regards
