Strathspey II

Strathspey II lying abandonned in Stornoway, April 2012

These boats need so much work, with Shemaron it can be a struggle just to stand still. We had her on the slip at Campbeltown for two days, between us all we worked about 100 hours and that was by no means a complete job.

Indeed Chris. My Father had a 50 ft wooden boat for 30+ years and I became street wise as a result. Me and my brother spent all of our time keeping up with the cosmetic maintenance and the oldman with the systems etc. In reality we got about four weeks a year real use out of the boat. Thats why I jumped at the wee Dawn Pearl - this is the first year in my life that I have a boat ready for the season at the end of March and thats purely down to her manageable size..

My Job took me to Germany in 1993 and I never made it back. Three years ago I was working in Hamburg and bought the Dawn Pearl on a bit of an impulse (show me the man who doesn't buy an old wooden boat on impulse). She was in Kilkeel when I shook hands on the deal and my initial idea was to have her brought over on the back of a truck then I got the quote!. So I told the family sorry no holidays this year and used up most of my holiday alowance bringing her over to Hamburg. Last year I changed job and I am now based just south of Berlin so thats where she is now based. Germany has a vast network of inland waterways and she is a good size to go touring about. The  plan for next year is to run down the River Oder (which defines the border between Germany and Poland) into the Baltic and get her out on some open wate again.

Oh yes indeedy the Baltic is my kinda cruising ground Angus, wooden boat Nirvana in places, I had a whale of a time last time I went plodding round the Baltic. The long term aim with the Ocean Gem is to relocate her to warmer climes when she finished but its a couple of years away yet.
