Silver Birch FR39 Oops

Silver Birch FR39 Oops

While planking, I discovered that something just was not right. Careful scrutiny revealed that the combined plywood keel and stem/stern posts had developed a twist. This meant that I had to remove 12 planks, leaving only the first plank on either side. Two frames were also not quite right and had to be removed and re-fixed. I thought this would be a case of scrapping and starting again. However, along the way, I knew that Cyanoacrilate (superglue) hates heat. So I experimented with an electric paint stripping heat gun and voila...! That did the trick and the frames can be relocated and re-used. That was the end of another attempt to build without an assembly jig. This picture shows the new jig with the necessary apparatus to cure the twist. A vertical assembly was fixed to the board (painted black) to straighten out the twist and a keel straightener was made up (also black).  As the planks are replaced, the hull will be reinforced and remain aligned. Working with plywood is not for the faint-hearted.

    Another steep learning curve, Will.
I always find that you learn more and more by making them, great rescue effort and no doubt she will be launched on time.
