Milling Timber

Milling Timber

I work out of the Gal Gael's workshop in Govan, Glasgow. The Gal Gael is a social justice charity working with long term unemployed people, teaching them woodwork as a route back into work. Part of my commitment to the charity is to take on volunteers from the wider community and teach them boat building.

Here a volunteer is helping mill green oak for the frames.

Good to see boat building skills being passed on Ben, maybe be enough to keep the art form it is going for another generation or two
Yes I get a lot from teaching. It should be said that while the volunteer in this photo isn't exactly the 'next generation' I have taught 4th year school students and young school leavers, as well as the unemployed and not least quite a lot of people that were just a bit bored with their free time.
I been in the Galgael workshop - a very interesting visit -some interesting old wooden craft in varios stages of renovation on show. What was also interesting was the people getting training had very down on there luck and in rehab who had a chance to do something with there lives and to hear them talk positively a bout learning  their lives was good to see-really positive -makes a nice change fae doom and gloom!
