Fine Sandhaven build, early '50s .. Faithful Star BF127, for brothers Jimmy and Dodie (Fairmer) Watt. Mainly driftnet. Switched to prawns, but soon sold to Jim (Fairmer) Watt and Forbes West, later of Bountiful. They fished pair trawl and prawns, but sold her on to acquire newer vessel and more horse power. Remember Billy Bowie skippered F Star FR101. Don't know any more.
I was aboard her when she first went to the trawl, after having been to the drift net. There were 8 o a crew, and none of us, including the skipper had been to the trawl before. There were no gallows and the gear was worked over the side, like she seemes to be rigged in that photie. To try the gear, we went west up off Buckie, I think it was, and for 2 or 3 short tows, we got aboot 30 odd boxes of cod, nae mony prawns, iff any, which we landed at the harbour enterance in Macduff, as it was low water.. We landed them on to Willie Ritchies lorry. This all happened in April 19 68,seems like yesterday,...but a long long time ago...
Hey, Baden. Ye must be loaded!!! What a start to a new job. Fillin' lorries wi' "green", nae lang efter "kick off"!!! Keep the "crack" comin'. From what Fob tellt me, I dinna think that Jimmy or Dodie were amused wi' this "new fangled" trawlin' efter a lifetime o' drift nettin' !! Wasna lang till Fob bocht her, along wi' Jim.
The sad truth, and certainly nae a secret George, is that I made some poor investments in wine , women, and song, and the rest I just squandered, but of course, I mended the error of my ways, and am now very sensible,...... I think .
I mind being aboard the Sheanne (pelagic trawler) in Killybegs a puckle o' year ago. The crew, as a syndicate, had won a "divot" o' money on the lottery. A reporter came aboard and asked them how they would be spendin' it. The mate, acting as spokesman, told him ... "We're going to spend some on drink, some on wimmen, and some on parties". When asked about how they'd spend the rest, he was told.. "We'll just squaaander what's left"!!
