Watch yuor fingers in the gate, where are the spouts ?.
Antique!:> wheres the chain drive and the wee curvy gutter things (technical -eh?) that coiled the ropes below?
Aye scorcha it coiled the ropes doon the bins
Ropes below Sorcha, were considered luxury , and a big improvement on having to manhandle every coil of rope , both sides 8 to 10 coil aside just yersel, until fast gear after the net was closed, ye usually got some help, meanwhile ye had to wash and pass fish doon the hold . All ropes at that time were neatly coiled on deck, and some boat crews made an affa bonny job of the stowed ropes, especially the Buckie men
Think the Arbroath boat the June Rose took a bit o' beatin as far as deck tidyness went.
Three Cheers for Auto Reels!
Got bitten by one of these on many occasions.....
Wasna a seine net man, although I've seen it worked. Thought some o' you old salts would like Peter Buchan's poem on the subject ... 3 verses ta'en fae "Stormy Bank"
I'm tired and weary, lookin' at the coiler spoots gan roon,
Fae brak' o' sky till gloamin' brings release.
The water's sma', the tide's aa' richt, the sun's jist beatin' doon,
And yet I canna get a meenit's peace.
There's shoutin' on the wireless that wid deeve yer verra heid,
Fae them that canna get their nets to come.
There's plenty information gi'en, fan folk's nae comin' speed,
But them that's gettin' on are singin' dumb.
Hech aye! I'll hae to stick it wi' the greet within my throat;
They say the road's gey lang that disna bend.
It's time there wis a turnin', but there's nae appearance o't,
And I wish this weary trip was at an end.
