    O what a bonnie picture o SILVER CREST ,foremast laid ,sma boat, and perfect baggywrinkle, chust sublime as Para Handy wid say..I see that PD drifter  ahead has the Pruiner Trophy vane on top of his mizzen mast, maybee Gee Bee will be able to tell us fa he is... :crazy2:

    I can make out PD23?, so it's either Morning Star PD234, or Unity PD230. Both trophy winners 1955 and '56 respectively. Not too sure, but the heavy belting , seen best on the stern at deck level, and the low head,would make me go for Unity, but still not certain. Morning Star was a big, beefy boat.
    Memories! Standing at the South Harbour entrance (the Pintie) at PD, watching the fleet going out. The sounds of gulls, engines, men, bairns shoutin' "cheerio" to dads etc .. the smells of diesel, smoke (from coal stoves), tar, bark etc. Funny how ye can remember smells, in yer brain!!!
    FLEETS left the harbour then, not the occasional boat or two!! We'd watch some go, and see more queueing up at the bridge, ready to go.
    Could be either Geebee , this Silver Crest was built in 1955 replacing the FR217 one which was only a few years old
    Zoomed in as far as I can. Looks like a trophy winner on Silver Crest's port bow. Think that's a "fishie" on her foremast. not a lot of seine net derricks in the picture, but the boat on the right has the derrick coming out from the mast , rather than the side of the caisson. Jackson's Fruitful PD354 had after derricks set this way. So there's a few "snappers" in that photo!!!

    Thank you George for a that interesting information . The great thing aboot a this  stuff on this site,or for that matter any site far folk reveals stuff that that would otherwise be left untold,is that it will be on here forever for future generations to learn aboot, cos it seems the time is nae too far awa,fan even meeting or knowing a real fisherman to ask aboot things,will be very rare indeed,  but thankfully, thers still a good few o us left, as this site certainly shows.. :crazy2:

    Twa  trophy boats  ahead  o'  Silver Crest.   :crazy2: :crazy2: :cheers:are  Ritchies  FR.25  Maitland Trophy.The  ither  boat  is  Unity.  PD.230. BIT  she  NIVVER  won  the  Pruiner trophy  so  it  must  be  the  Boothby
    I agree it is the Unity, she had a thick rubbing strake and her mizzen was always stowed high, I think this was a sooth firth custom,she was originally Taeping KY.She got the Boothby Trophy in early 50s when Jakie (Violet Flower) was temporary skipper in place of Jimmy Pallates her owner. I am sure she came into Peterhead from west coast on the Saturday of the January 1953 great gale with 40? cran. so she must have been a pretty good sea boat. That was the day when a Gardner main engine was washed off the greenhill pier in PD onto the Girl Bettys foredeck
    Very interesting info, Chumla! Never heard the "engine" story, but the Girl Betty left Aberdeen, after discharging, and had a horrendous sail to PD, caught in that storm. Glad to get into PD eventually . THEN to get an engine land on your deck  !!!! As they say, "Out of the frying pan" etc. etc. !
    As for Jakie's trophy, I've mentioned this somewhere before ... my late esteemed friend David Lemon was out for a night aboard Unity when they won the trophy... before his 8th birthday!!!! There's a photo of him being presented to Lord Boothby!!!
