Fascinating photo, taken about 1950, I would guess; certainly in the summer, judging by the number of herring drifters with shots, their nets "redd up" and landing. Some steam drifters landing at the Lifeboat Jetty and in the Balaclava, though the ones tied up at the North Breakwater, were probably awaiting scrapping by Williamson; no connection, so far as I know, with the present scrap merchants business of Williamson in Fraserburgh. In the background on the "Pantoon" what appears to be a steam trawler, as opposed to a steam drifter. No leaders lying on the Tarry pier(the North Pier), which would also indicate it was summer time. Lying below the Lifeboat Shed in the photo, at the head of the Black Sands is a wooden barge, just beside the Herring Market. Two other wooden barges of similiar build lay at the nearer side of the sands, though not seen in this photo. They were I believe used as working barges in an earlier harbour deepening scheme, but by the 1950s were derelict and the tides ebbed and flowed through them. No roof on the fishmarket in the foreground, but two steam cranes working at the inner end of the market. I believe they were widening the pier in front of the market and refacing it. The market roof would have to be removed to allow the cranes to work, and then replaced.
