Girl Jean masts.

Girl Jean masts.

The masts are shaped from 8mm square pine. The square section runs for a part of the length and the radius starts just beyond. I lightly mark the start of the radiused section then I calculate the diameter of the mast top.  I draw a line from the end of the square section to the top of the mast on one side which is marked to show the taper. The timber is sanded to the marked taper line. You will then have a tapered rectangle. Repeat the marking on the machined sides and sand to profile.  It is then a case of radiusing the corners gradually until the required mast shape is produced. Using a belt sander reduces the working time dramatically, typically taking approx 30 mins each. The strange looking tabernacle is also in the picture, made from nickel-silver and soldered. Eureka!!!! Only just worked out the possible reason for the tabernacle extension is to accomodate the coiler underneath..... Yes? Still think it would be a better idea to lift the mast.
