Neptune's Staircase at Banavie before the gates were hydraulic.
It was a sair fecht at times. Willie Bremner on the gate opening the slushes with Loch Linnhe and the freedom of the open sea in sight.

    would be a sair fecht a single boat going through anytime we went through there was two three sometimes four boats together most of the crews manning the gates it was still sair going

    There used to be a squad of Canal workers at the locks especially that part but it was still a struggle at times.
