Havena seen many pictures o wooden boats sidewindin the trawl. Were there many doing that? Another brilliant pic. Think I'll find out where Ally lives and move in next door.
Plenty wooden boats worked the side trawl in Buckie in the 70's Will, worked aboard a few myself. Glad ye like the pic
Will dig out a few old photos of the BCK sidewinders for ye Will

Cheers Ally. Maybe it was just my sheltered upbringing in AH where they were either crabbers or seiners. I'll certainly look out for more. Thanks for the edit.
Cheers

Early '60s, a lot of seiners changed to trawling (sidewinding). It was really the advent of pair trawling for sprats and herring that made them switch to shooting over the stern. Main reason was they were shooting on a shoal of fish,
and had to be accurate, plus the extra long nets were streamed much easier.

Thanks for the info GeeBee. I left AH in the early 60's for a mis-spent period in the forces. Oh,what I missed!
When Stuartie Finlay of the PD Star of Promise worked the broadside I mind him telling me it was every bit as easy to shoot that way as it was over the stern,he could get his gear away as fast as us so he said. Was beside him at the Beaches the next day, both cod ends going over at the same time..we were shot and towing a good five minutes by the time he was running his wires..if he thought that was quick it wasnae what I would have called it..seem tae spend mair time gaun roond in circles trying tae get the net away..yon caper wasnae for me
Looks like the old Laurel FR .. she was old when I was young .. can't remember all her history, but Peter (Crom) Duthie had her before taking over Aquarius when Jim Slater got purser Aquila.
A full, rounded hull, unlike some of the leaner wooden boats.

She was the FR Laurel and was rigged for shooting the prawn net over the stern and the bobbin trawl over the starboard side.Willie Watson had her before he got the Contender KY357.
My father told me he can remember this one at the yarmouth herring fishing in the early 50s, not sure if he mentioned she had a green hull at that time?, dont quote on that !
