PS Waverley on the River Avon

PS Waverley on the River Avon

This oil painting, just completed, is based on a photograph which appeared in 'Ships Monthly' in June 1996. It shows the 'Waverley' as she passes below Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, on her way down the River Avon.  The city can be seen in the background.  I liked the balance between the two pieces of engineering, Brunel's beautiful bridge (built to his design after his death by Thomas Guppy) and the 'last ocean-going paddle-steamer', 'Waverley', looking splendid even in the muddy waters of the Avon!  Enjoy the cruise, along with the rest of the passengers!

Many thanks indeed, Ringnetman.  Very kind of you to comment in this way - much appreciated.  :coolsmiley: I have posted the final version, which shows the vertical support cables on the bridge.  It also shows the shading and reflections on the hull.  All the very best, Donald.
:D I know, I know, you must have been wondering why I've not gotten to this yet Donald, but I've not been on here at all...Kenny told me you'd posted it- so here I am to tell you what a fabulous job you made of this oil !!! It needs to be zoomed in on to appreciate the detail on the ship which is lovely and the oils fairly make a wonderful reflective job of the sea...well done Donald...one of your BEST !!!

Many thanks indeed, Debra, for your very kind words.  I do think that this shows a considerable improvement in my overall approach - more confidence, increasing range of subjects and contexts etc., more command of the brush and of colour.  I enjoyed the opportunity to paint a bridge as well as a ship - both of them favourites of mine.  I am so grateful to you for your enthusiastic comments and unfailing encouragement, Debra.   All the very best to you and Kenny.  O0 :coolsmiley:
