To me, Vigilant's decommissioning under the so-called Resilience scheme is a symbol of the lunacy that prevails
I have emailed fishery minister Richard Lochhead to that effect
    Resilience? My arse!
Their is going to be a lot of sad people on the West Coast, particularly Scalpay Harris when the Vigilant gets the chop. I just wish she could have been saved for a museum  to let future generations learn about the Ring net. Failing that it would have been nice to have seen her in private hands and used for pleasure, at least if there was somone out there with the resources she could have perhaps kept some employment in a yard or yards for another few years.

Just vandalism.......ok if she was in a shocking state. I thought all this BIG SOCIETY was to give us a say in what goes on!
get a busload of bodies ,go up there and sit on her deck, like the tree huggers, mebey manage to save her then,,
i dinna think the skipper would appreciate that ...he wont get his cheque until shes made unseaworthy ...there is an easier way just make the skipper a matching offer to the goverments one and im pretty sure shes yours , get some of that young blood everybodys bangin on about to be skipper and bobs your auntie ...oh and good luck ....cos if a man like sandy canna make it work anymore  ,i hae my doubts about anyone else ...i think the phrase here is waken up and smell the coffee......all this deathrow doom and gloom is bollocks ...its a business that is no longer viable and the decomm is a lifeline to many that are only to glad to get it...
mr jay know f**k all creswell when ur e mailing richard boulder brain lochhead will u tell him we need more decom money because if things keep going as they are fuel etc rocketing prawn prices clam prices 70s mode we are going to need it.i hear u talking about waving cheque books in fishermens faces iv still to meet this c nt yet and im 50yrs at this job with boats .theres a lot of young men at fishing here on west coast where im at my two sons among them struggling to make a living at a job the men like and know nothing else.decom is the last thing they want but they might be forced into it.dont know whit all the fuss about decom about its been on go from 1982 and a good way of getting rid of old boats.there is a lot shite talked on here wi folk that isnt at the job or never likely to be either so shut to f**k up and leave the men to deal with it themselves as they always had to do.this is whats been going on in fishing industry for to long sea lawyers interlopers and arseholes shouting there mouth at something they know nothing about or the way of life we lead.gie us peace.  our lassie b763
think a side order of chill pills is mebbees needed all round

the point is not that taking the decom money is a bad thing, If I was in many skippers shoes given the current situation I'd take it as well.

The point is that vessels that are in a perfectly useable condition are being destroyed when they could be put to uses other than fishing or sold to the leisure sector, or in some case even just preserved, that is unless you'd actually rather see a perfectly good boat been turned to fire wood

I tried to buy one that was being cut up in one of the early rounds.  Still don't understand the logic that there I was waving 20 grand at the man from the ministry, but no, chainsaw it had to be.

If every boat that had been cut up had been sold away from the industry instead that in itself would have raised a good few more  quid to either support the industry or ease the burden on the tax payer

With an industry that is so tightly controlled the arguement that it is to prevent it ever been used for fishing again doesn't add up to me.

from an economic point of view, surely breaking up the quota arrangements so there's more smaller boats making a living has to be better than just a few big boats. Unless of course your one of the rich corporations that are getting richer on the back of it

S'pose its like the rest of society.  why have a small family run grocers on every street corner when you can have a massive tescos that puts em all out of business and makes its shareholders even richer than they are already
aye your right there could have been a relaxation of the rules to allow a boat to be put to another use ...there have been some grand boats cut up ...but in reality how many would be utilised ...if you look on some of the foreign websites every country is awash with boats to be scrapped...i suspect the harbours would be cluttered up with the rotting hulks of unfinished projects for years to come 8:)

Just a wee point were would you put all the old boats if there had been no decom from the mid 80s because a lot of the 50/60 built boats that got decom in the early rounds were past there sell by date .and the port that the boat comes from Lossie  does not want fishing boats .
