Like every other port in country Jay, struggling with high fuel costs and decreasing profit line, some things never change in this industry.
Certainly do not think the decom scheme is neccessarily a bad thing, probably the only way for some guys to get out but then the Gov gets it both ways as they will claw back some of the costs with Capital Gains anyway.
Unfortunately the unintended consequence is it closes the door for entrants into skipper/ownership brave enough to give it a try, or is it.
your missing the point restlesswave  nobody is is forcing this skipper to take the decomm ....hes taking it because the fishing in all his areas is chronic ...the prices for prawns are stuck in 1970s mode and fuel is rocketing up every quarter ...he wants it because the boat is no longer viable as are many others ...as for wanting a forced decommisioning of the bigger boats , god forbid ,you want these guys that have built up a viable business by hard work and good business calls to be forced out ...you need to rethink that i would say.....
Id take this off their hands and keep her as a ringer for generations to come to see, but no a boat will become firewood cause of stupid covernment rules what a waste she could sit in chareston next to christina and get put to good use without ever fishing again.

    What a waste

by the look of this one she still has the original fo'csle hatch, skylight it is the original wheelhouse just the tripod and gallows shelter winch off her and there the boat is how she prob came from the yard

got the perfect place to stick the wheelhouse.  probably more hassle than its worth for them to try remove it intact though.
top notch / modern boats  spend a lot of money ashore on maintenance and keeping things modern , there  are a lot off skills involved from tradesmen today keeping a new vessel at sea, all you have to do is have a look inside one.
, 3 or 4 engines , ice machines , electronics etc, its a lot of jos for shore side firms. A lot of the new vessels are family owned from years of reinvestment and they have been built with the next generation in mind as most of them have young family or sons to come behind them.is this not classed as young blood getting a foot on the lader

its sad a good boat is getting the chop , but realisticly if the new boats were choped it would leave an aging fleet and the older they get the more they cost.
don't think its a question of new versus old.

better in my book to see off a few of the super seiners and the like and keep a dozen smaller boats going instead. There be as much work if not more shore side and a lot more families earning a living at sea
its all about this government and previouse govenments not givin 2 F***S  about the fishing industry or BRUSSELS just wait till the  north sea is opened up 2 eu countrys there will be plenty  QUOTA THEN .....
