venture pd 257

Venture PD 237, built at Stephens of Banff 1933 for Rob and Jake Forman. Rob founded the Caley, as it's known now. Jake was father of George (Dide) Forman, who skippered Faithful, Venture, and Veracious.
A very basic looking craft, but this was the way forward then, with an economical motor boat, following the steam era.
Donald Anderson says she was built "at a cost of £1640 ready for sea .. the first MFV in Peterhead with a high speed diesel engine. Diesel oil cost 3d per gallon then. Her fuel bill from Peterhead to Yarmouth was £1-17s-6d. The original engine was an 80hp National".

Say 300 miles for the passage at a rough guess, that's working out at a penny ha'penny a mile Gee Bee.He must have put 150 gallons through the pipes in 30 odd hours of steaming(if my mathematics are right..been a wee while since ma doup was on a school seat!)a bit less than 5 gallons an hour.Don't suppose that would be excessive for a 1930s diesel given that the pump and the injectors probably wouldnae be in the same league as the modern stuff.
