A fisherman went overboard from a boat off the North Wales coast

A FISHERMAN is missing, feared dead, after falling overboard without a lifejacket, 16 miles out to sea in Caernarfon Bay.
The unnamed man was reported missing from his vessel which was scallop dredging during the early hours of Friday.
This sparked a major 15-hour search and rescue operation involving eight boats and the Rescue 122 helicopter from RAF Valley, covering an area of 60sq miles from the South Stack lighthouse near Holyhead into Caernarfon Bay.
Rescuers worked from the early hours and throughout Friday in a bid to find the missing man but the search was eventually called at 3pm yesterday.

The chances of him being found alive are almost non-existent. He was wearing jeans and a T-shirt but no life jacket in sea temperatures of 8°C.
The Scottish registered dredger was escorted back to shore by the RNLI, where the crew were met by HM Coastguard, North Wales Police and officials from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) who have launched a probe into the incident.
Holyhead coastguard’s rescue coordination manager, Ray Carson, was in charge of the aborted search.
He confirmed that the man, believed to be from Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, was reported missing by his colleagues at 2.29am on Friday.
Holyhead, Porthdinllaen and Trearddur Bay RNLI lifeboats, and the inshore lifeboat all took part in the initial search, as did the dredger, called the St Amant, and local fishing vessels.
Mr Carson said: “The vessel sailed from Holyhead at 11:25pm to go scallop dredging in Caernarfon Bay. “The missing person was last seen in the galley of the ship at 12:45am . The vessel was 1.2 miles west of South Stack lighthouse, near Holyhead.”
But by the time the crew realised the man was missing, the dredger was about 15 miles off the coast.
He added: “Initially the search was undertaken by Rescue 122 helicopter from Valley and the Holyhead RNLI all-weather lifeboat. “They both searched from the South Stack to the mayday position in Caernarfon Bay.
“We then brought in Trearddur Bay’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat and Porthdinllaen lifeboat, and they were joined by three other fishing vessels and the casualty vessel. They searched in a line working northwards up to South Stack from the mayday position.”
Trearddur Bay’s inshore lifeboat carried out a coastal search. The rescue helicopter had to return to RAF Valley early on Friday morning to refuel but the boats continued to search the area throughout Friday, Mr Carson added.
A North Wales Police spokesman said officers were working with colleagues in the Dumfries and Galloway Force to try to establish the identity of the man.

The MAIB would lead the investigation but the spokesman confirmed that officers would speak to the crew.
