A COUNTY DOWN community is in mourning for the loss of two of the crew of the 68ft prawn trawler Green Hill which sank after striking rocks close to the harbour entrance at Ardglass on Thursday evening.
The three man crew attempted to get into a life raft but two of them, Donal Gibson and Conor Bogues didn’t make it and were presumed drowned.
Searches continued over the weekend and on Sunday afternoon divers recovered the body of Donal Gibson close the site of the sunken vessel.
Two lifeboats, four coastguard teams, two helicopters, a mountain rescue team, fishing boats and many local people scoured waters and coastline after the Green Hill hit rocks near Ardglass port during a storm on the Thursday at around 8.00 pm.
The skipper of the wrecked vessel, Conrad Zych, was picked up alive but hope faded for his two crewmates after coastguard sonar equipment located the sunken boat half a mile from the shore as gales continues.
The search began when an automatic SOS was picked up in Scotland on Thursday evening. An alert was sent to the Northern Irish Coastguard, who asked the Portaferry RNLI boat out on an exercise in the area to check if the fishing boat has returned to port.
RNLI crew member Simon Rogers said “As we sailed in I shouted to the first fishing boat, ‘Is the Green Hill in the harbour?’ A man replied, ‘That’s my son’s boat. I haven’t been able to get in contact for the last hour’. We started our search immediately after that.”
Within minutes the RNLI crew spotted skipper Conrad, 26, in a life raft and he was rushed to hospital in Downpatrick suffering from hypothermia. There was no sign of the other crew members.
